Building Sustainable Green Institutions

Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE)Mahim, Mumbai transitions to a solar campus

In a significant leap toward environmental sustainability, the Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE) in Mahim, Mumbai, has successfully transitioned its campus into a solar-powered powerhouse.

The journey, which began over a decade ago with a modest 60 kW setup, has now scaled to a massive 225 kW solar power system.

XIE also has amongst the largest tree cover in Bombay Jesuit Province
As per Dashboard:
Online Solar:220kW
Solar Street Light: 65 Nos
Solar Hot Water: 2000L
Solar Pump: 10kW

By utilizing the entire terrace of its five-storey building with high-efficiency 620 W panels, the institute has managed to achieve a feat many urban institutions only dream of: reducing its monthly electricity bill from a staggering ₹3.5 lakh to zero.

The financial and operational impact of this transition is profound. The campus now runs entirely on renewable energy, powering everything from lights, fans, and air-conditioning units to sensitive laboratory equipment and even an on-site electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

By generating over 1,125 kW of power, XIE has not only insulated itself from rising power tariffs but has also significantly lowered its carbon footprint. The project, supported by the Allan and Lalita Foundation, has become a model of economic sustainability, with installation costs dropping over the years from ₹60,000 per kW to just ₹15,000 per kW.

Beyond the utility savings, the solar installation serves as a “living laboratory” for XIE’s students. The institute has integrated solar technology into its curriculum for both diploma and degree students, providing them with hands-on experience in renewable energy systems.

This initiative has earned the college accolades, including the Green Mission Award, and positions XIE as a leader in Mumbai’s educational sector.

By exporting surplus energy back to the grid through net-metering, the institute is not just consuming energy responsibly but is actively contributing to the city’s green energy goals.
